The Schengen Agreement was first signed on 14 June 1985 in the small Luxembourg village of Schengen on the border between Germany and France. From this and got this name.
Under the agreement, all signatory countries to phase out controls at their common borders, as well as given the right to visa-free travel.
The first countries that signed the treaty were Belgium, Germany, Spain, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal and France. In 2006, the Schengen area, Austria, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Sweden and Finland. All countries, except Norway and Iceland are European Union members, and two members of the EU, Ireland and the UK are not included in the Schengen zone.
21 December 2007 the Schengen area have joined 9 other countries: Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Estonia. Switzerland acceded to the composition of the Schengen agreement on Dec. 12, 2008.
