Carte d’Algérie (Wilaya de Mostaganem) Mostaganem (arabe: مستغانم), est une ville et wilaya d’Algérie. Elle est la 27e wilaya dans l’administration territoriale algérienne. (104 m d’alt. ;140 000 hab.;ch-l. d’une wilaya de 704 000 hab.) ; située sur le rebord d’un plateau côtier, la ville contemple à l’ouest la large baie d’Arzew que termine le Djebel Orousse ; elle est assise sur les rives de l’Aïn Sefra dont, à plusieurs reprises et notamment en 1927, elle a eu à redouter les crues ; elle se compose d’une ville neuve, très étendue, et d’une vieille ville, plus compacte, accrochées de part et d’autre d’un profond ravin creusé par l’Aïn Sefra, qui arrose des jardins. La localité est bien située au débouché des plaines du Chélif et de la Macta, Bien qu’elle ait depuis longtemps cédé le pas à la métropole de l’Algérie occidentale, Oran, Mostaganem est une ville aimablement grouillante. Elle a gardé un caractère ancien, mais s’est également ouverte à une économie moderne avec la création d’une sucrerie produisant de 70 à 80 000 tonnes de sucre raffiné par an, ainsi qu’une usine de pâte à papier traitant 180 000 tonnes d’alfa par an. The landings commenced on June 6, 1944 (D-Day), beginning at 6:30 British Double Summer Time (H-Hour). In planning, D-Day was the term used for the day of actual landing, which was dependent on final approval. The assault was conducted in two phases: an air assault landing of American, British and Canadian airborne troops shortly after midnight, and an amphibious landing of Allied infantry and armoured divisions on the coast of France commencing at 6:30. The invasion required the transport of soldiers and materiel from the United Kingdom by troop carrying aircraft and ships, the assault landings, air support, naval interdiction of the English Channel and naval fire-support. There were also subsidiary ‘attacks’ mounted under the codenames Operation Glimmer and Operation Taxable to distract the Kriegsmarine and the German army from the real landing areas. The operation was the largest single-day amphibious invasion of all time, with 160000 troops landing on June 6, 1944. 195700 Allied naval and merchant navy personnel in over 5000 ships were involved.
